Tips for taking care of your baby

< Back to Parenting Tips

As you’ve been experiencing, there is so much to learn about your little one. We’ve tried to simplify it a little.

• A baby usually starts crying more around 3 weeks, this peaks around 6-8 weeks and tends to subside around 12 weeks
• Most babies cry/fuss 1-3 hours a day
• Crying is the way babies communicate & shut out the world when they are tired
• 1 out of 3 babies is sensitive & may cry/fuss more than 3 hours a day
• Resist the urge to “know” everything about babies (i.e. put the books down and limit time on the internet)
• One constant in parenting is that whatever stage they are in, it will pass & quickly
• It isn’t possible to spoil a baby by holding them too much
• Don’t worry about messing up their sleep habits in the first 3 months, do what works for you & your family
• If every day feels chaotic & different, track your baby’s sleeping & eating, a pattern may emerge
• Babies usually need to go back to sleep after 1-2 hours of being awake
• Focus on connecting with your baby; look, hold, smell, talk
• Be in the present; let life be about the moments

Self-care is essential to finding balance as a mother. Plan it, schedule it, do it!
